Inspired by the ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the Edo period, the vignette depicts a courtesan in a tea-house setting, a favourite subject among contemporary artists, notably Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1808) who was famous for his depiction of women of the Floating World.
In the late Edo period (end of 18th century) , horimono (traditional Japanese tattoos) was very popular among the working class: labourers, firemen and courtesans. The themes were often mythological or religious based on images from watercolour paintings, woodcuts and picture books.
