Earth Defense Directorate Thunderfighter
In the 25th century,
(1979-81) remains one of the most beloved sci-fi series of the mid 20th century. Starring Gil Gerard as Buck, a NASA astronaut flash frozen for 500 years while on a mission in deep space, the series was a goofy tonic to the darker, more somber "Battlestar Galactica," also produced by Glen A. Larson.
The series' "hero" ship was the Thunderfighter, a two-man transatmospheric space fighter flown by the Earth Defense Directorate. The fighter was designed by "Star Wars" alumnus Ralph McQuarrie for "Balttlestar Galactica," its twin conical gun pods earning it the name "Viper." Of course, the "Viper" moniker was ultimately given to another craft, the design subsequently appropriated by the "Buck Rogers" series. (Many fans actually prefer this design to the BSG Viper!)
The Earth Defense Directorate's main weapon was the "Thunderfighter," a single-seat air/space fighter with two rocket engines and a pair of underslung tails that also acted as landing legs. The Thunderfighter was released in a kinda 1:48 scale by Monogram in the late 1970s, and Alliance Models did a better detailed, similarly scaled kit 25 years later.
This is the first 1:72 model of this iconic spacecraft.
